Please excuse the phrase “Is the grass always greener?” The
short answer is yes if you want it to be. Our knowledge of lawn care in Utah
tells us that if you follow these 5 simple steps you can have the beautiful
green lawn that makes you feel proud. If you are not getting the results that
you want please contact us for an honest assessment and how we can help.
- Lawn care – Cut your lawn with sharp blades at an acceptable height. Cutting your lawn too short allows moisture to evaporate quicker and will not allow the lawn to get the needed moisture. You will in turn have brown spots or not a full green color.
- Water your lawn – It helps to have an installed sprinkler system to make this easy but make sure you are watering deeply and infrequently. The logic that if I water a lot it should be greener does not always help matters. Have a consistent schedule and make sure you lawn is getting proper coverage in all areas.
- Fertilize your lawn – We typically provide 4 applications starting in the spring, during the early summer, later summer, and into the fall. Fertilizer allows your lawn to get additional nutrients and promote growth. Look at local vendors like Intermountain Farmers who produce a product made for the inter-mountain region.
- Control your weeds! - Nothing chokes out your grass quicker than having to compete with weeds. The best way to do this is to apply a pre-emergent in the spring (coupled with fertilizer) and occasionally spot treat weeds that can pop up throughout the year. Make sure you know what you are doing when applying weed control to avoid killing your lawn.
- It is okay to mulch – we advocate that you don’t always have to take the clippings off the lawn in bags. Mulching small lawn clippings allows nutrients to be recycled into the ground and promotes greener lawn. If you let your lawn get overgrown this tip will not help.
