Sprinkling Systems - Drought Issues in Utah

A recent article in the Salt Lake Tribune stated that currently we are at about 75% of normal for snow pack down from last year. What does this mean to me? Well most of our water comes from this snow pack including the water we use for our sprinkling systems.

If we continue to experience this warmer weather and limited storms we need to be aware that efforts to conserve water will help all in the long run. How can I help and improve my sprinkling system to not waste water?

  • Don't water in the middle of the day: suggested watering times are in the early a.m. hours so that the water you use is not evaporated before it hits the ground in warm temperatures. Timers on your sprinkling systems allow you to dictate when you should water your lawn.
  •  You don't need the same amount of water in each area of your yard: flower beds and park strips don't require as much watering as the larger areas of your lawn. Make sure these zones are set for a lesser amount of time. Also consider that you can install drip systems to reduce the amount of water you use for flower beds, trees, and shrubs.
  • Assess your sprinkling system on a regular basis: Broken pipes, broken sprinkler heads, and incorrectly aligned sprinkler tips can waste water and increase your water bill.
  • If it rains, use mother nature to your advantage: Turn off your sprinkling system if it is set to rain that day and let the natural rain fall help out.
