Large landscaping project - What to consider?

It is no secret that landscaping improvements add value to your property and quality of life.

Do you have a large landscaping project that you would like to tackle?  Have no clue on where to start? We are happy to go over this with you and provide you a full quote on the scope of work.

Besides the bottom line cost, which we understand is important, there are some other factors to consider when looking at a large scale landscape project.

Let us offer you an example of a large back yard landscaping project that was just completed in Sandy, Utah. The task seemed simple, turn the back yard into something desirable with a reasonable cost for the homeowner to have the ability to better offer their home on the real estate market.

As a landscaper we have to look at all phases of the project, which play into the dollar bottom line, but we want to make sure it is done properly to provide the best landscaping services. This includes thorough planning and using quality landscape materials.

1. Sprinkler system - for new sod you have to have irrigation to to be able to get the sod to take root. With this existing property there was a sprinkler system in the front yard so we had to tie into this, and then scale it for the larger back yard. From the sprinkler timer we wanted it all to work in unison.

2. Demo - this yard was filled with debris. For the overall look we had to remove debris and grade with a skid-steer. The debris has to go somewhere so it needs to be moved to lower spots or taken from the property in a dumpster.

3. Sod installation - Kentucky blue grass is the preferred grass in Salt Lake County. We needed to bring in quality topsoil over the grading. Once it was ready the sod was planted and a strategic watering program was implemented to provide the grass with the water it needs to take.

Sprinkling Systems - Drought Issues in Utah

A recent article in the Salt Lake Tribune stated that currently we are at about 75% of normal for snow pack down from last year. What does this mean to me? Well most of our water comes from this snow pack including the water we use for our sprinkling systems.

If we continue to experience this warmer weather and limited storms we need to be aware that efforts to conserve water will help all in the long run. How can I help and improve my sprinkling system to not waste water?

  • Don't water in the middle of the day: suggested watering times are in the early a.m. hours so that the water you use is not evaporated before it hits the ground in warm temperatures. Timers on your sprinkling systems allow you to dictate when you should water your lawn.
  •  You don't need the same amount of water in each area of your yard: flower beds and park strips don't require as much watering as the larger areas of your lawn. Make sure these zones are set for a lesser amount of time. Also consider that you can install drip systems to reduce the amount of water you use for flower beds, trees, and shrubs.
  • Assess your sprinkling system on a regular basis: Broken pipes, broken sprinkler heads, and incorrectly aligned sprinkler tips can waste water and increase your water bill.
  • If it rains, use mother nature to your advantage: Turn off your sprinkling system if it is set to rain that day and let the natural rain fall help out.
P&I Landscape can help you in this area. We can assess your sprinkling system to offer solutions that will save you time and money. Call us at 801-664-2488 or contact us through our website.

Sprinkler Problems? What to look for.

Sprinkler Problems?

With spring fast approaching you may experience broken sprinkler lines or broken sprinkler heads. It happens! What causes it? A variety of reasons (frozen water from the winter and time wear). I know this looks like a huge mess but it can easily be fixed.

You may even experience sprinkling system breaks during some of the warmer months. Again, It happens.

Things to look for...
A. Areas in your yard that are overly saturated (soggy).
B. Dry spots in your yard.
C. There is not enough pressure coming out of the sprinkler heads.
D. The most obvious - water shooting out of the ground.

What should you do? You can definitely contact us or call 801-664-2488 to look at things. We take pride in assessing your sprinkler problem areas and providing reasonable quotes to help you get it fixed. A proper functioning sprinkling system is vital to having a beautiful green lush grass.
